Weekend Getaway Questions Answered

Quick answers to help you plan your perfect Latvian escape, from palace visits to coastal walks and charming towns

Plan 2.5 to 3 hours if you're exploring both the palace interiors and the formal gardens. The gardens alone can take 1.5 hours if you're really taking your time with photos. If you're short on time, 90 minutes gives you the main highlights and a nice walk through the Baroque-style grounds.

Absolutely—they're only 3 km apart and take about 1.5 hours each to explore. Most visitors spend their morning at one castle, grab lunch in Sigulda town, then hit the other castle in the afternoon. Add another hour if you want to walk the Gauja Valley trail that connects them.

It's perfect—just 25 km from Riga, about 30 minutes by train. You can have a solid seaside afternoon with a beach walk and lunch at one of the beachfront cafés without needing to stay overnight.

They're different vibes. Kuldīga (about 90 minutes from Riga) has the widest waterfall in Europe and feels quieter, with red-brick buildings and a slower pace. Talsi is smaller and more intimate, perfect if you want to really escape the crowds. Both work great for a Saturday getaway—just pick based on whether you want waterfall scenery or a pure small-town experience.

May through September offers the warmest weather and longest daylight. The palace gardens are stunning in June and July. If you prefer fewer crowds, late May or early September are ideal—you'll still have good weather and way fewer tourists. Winter visits are beautiful too if you don't mind the cold and shorter days.

For Rundāle and Turaida castles, advance booking isn't required but recommended during peak season (June-August). For Jūrmala's beaches and Kuldīga's waterfall, no bookings needed—they're free and always open. If you're planning a Saturday in summer, booking the castles ahead saves you any disappointment.
